Taiwan's Earthquakes and Earthquake Precautions

When it comes to Taiwan, there are so many different reasons as to why Taiwan gets so many

earthquakes and because of this Taiwan becomes broken up into many different sections. So when talking

about Taiwan as a whole, you are more or less summing up everything from the 7 different sections as

seen below. Also seen below shows where all of the major earthquakes tend to usually happen and which

part of the island experiences less of the earthquakes. Specifically looking at the middle of the Western

Foothills, you can see their is a lot of seismic activity there as seen by the other image below indicated

with the red areas in a majority of the Western Foothills, which is understandable seeing as where one of

the biggest Earthquakes recorded, the Chi-Chi Earthquake, happened. Many of the earthquakes Taiwan

experiences are because they are pinched between the Eurasion and the Philippine Sea Plates. The most

recent earthquake for Taiwan was a 5.2 off the coast of North-East Hsueshan Range and North-East

Western Foothills affecting both Taiwan and Japan.

Lucky for Taiwan they have started implementing early warning systems for their country to help warn

and alert people to possible incoming earthquakes of hazardous proportions. The country has begun to use

a regional telemetered system which is run by their Central Weather Bureau, and on-site stand-alone sites

that can detect incoming earthquakes. The stand alone units called Palerts are able to detect incoming P-

waves and forecast possible S-waves. The Palerts are able to provide about 7-8 seconds of warning before

the actual Earthquakes begin. Their only issue is that they need to be placed in every building and can't

work for too big an area.
